Insect net protection above olive trees

Insect net protection above olive trees

Beautiful pictures of anti insect net protection above olive trees in Brindisi (Italy). Our partner Spinazzè Poles has built this insect net protection above olive trees to protect the olive trees against Xylella fastidiosa.

Insect net protection over olive treesXylella is a bacterium from the class of gamma proteobacteria and responsible for diseases in grapes (Pierce's disease), olive trees (olive plague) and oleanders. It poses a major threat to agriculture and is very difficult to control.

In Italy it has been a problem since September 2013. There Xylella fastidiosa threatens the olive trees. The so-called olive plague is mainly spread by the cricket, but there are at least twelve other insects that spread the disease. The disease occurs mainly in the southern Italy and in 2015, eleven million olive trees were threatened and one million trees are thought to be infected, out of a total of 10 million trees in the area in southern Puglia.

Since 2015, the olive tree plague bacterium has also been found outside Italy: in 2015 in France (first in Corsica, later on the mainland), at the end of 2016 in Germany and in the Balearic Islands. At the end of June 2017, it was found in an almond orchard in the Spanish province of Alicante. In September 2018, a one-off infestation was detected in West Flanders.
