What does a foil canopy cost?

What does a foil canopy cost?

As a cherry grower, you know you can grow the best cherries under a foil cover. Now there are many types of cherry covers. Therefore, the investment can vary greatly. In this blog, we give the price of the Powerflex Foil System. This is the foil cover that provides protection against rain, hail, insects and sunburn.  The system is wind stable and can handle wind speeds of 100km per hour.

The Powerflex film cover has been developed over the years. Protection against insects by insect nets in the gutter. Rain cannot pass through then, but always drips down the middle of the lane. The gutter can remain somewhat wider. This gives fantastic ventilation. Result: cherries stay dry and it doesn't get too hot under the canopy. And that's exactly what you need as a cherry grower.

Are you going to build a foil cover? Here are the different price factors:

  • Surface area of the cherry orchard

The larger the area of the plot, the more favorable it is to the price. This is because the anchoring is the most expensive. By this I mean a thicker post at the end, with an anchor, a cable and an anti-sinking plate. In the middle of the plot, this is not necessary. So the larger the plot, the better the proportions.

  • Quality of materials

There are many types of film available. A good quality woven film is needed for longevity. A lot of savings can be made on film. In the long run, a good quality film is a plus. Life spans with the right woven film can be years longer and that saves a lot in costs.

  • Soil type

Most soil types that cherries are grown on do not present any problems for the installation of a foil canopy. However, if the soil type is very hard or contains many stones, the installation of posts and anchors will take more time. The holes for the posts must then be pre-drilled and anchors vibrated or hammered. But soft soil, on the other hand, which offers little resistance requires larger anchors.

  • Post distance

The biggest influence on the cost of film canopies is the spacing of the poles. The greater the pole spacing the cheaper the system becomes. Foil canopies for cherry need to be especially wind stable. Therefore, you want to use the pole spacing as optimally as possible. Does the system have to be able to take a beating? Then the advice is to keep a maximum distance of 28m2 per pole.

  • Plot shape

The most convenient shape is rectangular. However, most plots are of a different shape. This is not a problem in installation, but may incur additional costs. However, that is not always the case.

Cost of film cover

I would like to let you know what a foil cover costs. I have assumed an average price for 1 hectare.

The cost of the Powerflex Foil System is between €50,000 and €60,000 per hectare. These are the costs for materials. The materials then still need to be assembled. For installation, the cost is about €25,000.

So the total investment is about €85,000,- euro for 1 hectare PowerFlex rain cover.

The cost can fluctuate which type of system you take. If it is a system combined with hail net and foil the cost is €60,000. If it is just woven film then it is €50,000. Options to have the system give protection against insects like the Suzuki fly give about an additional cost of €10,000,- euro.

If you are considering investing in a cherry orchard with rain protection, it is good to make a cost calculation. In this you can include the harvest security and quality improvement of your cherries. After all, your cherries will grow bigger under a rain cover than outside rain covers. This is because you can leave them hanging longer. You don't have to worry about them bursting. Investing in insect protection saves in pest control costs. Good infrastructure in your orchard to work efficiently. These are factors that factor into the payback of a rain cover.
