Soft fruit in fruit cultivation
Soft fruit and FruitSecurity Holland
There are many types of soft fruit. Examples of soft fruit are: strawberries, raspberries, cherries, blueberries, etc. The choice of a variety is determined by a number of factors: such as climate zone, local climatic conditions, type of soil, market demand, etc. In the Netherlands, fruit growing started to develop strongly from 1875 onwards. The orchards were mainly planted on clay soil.
During the first few years of the 20th century, fruit cultivation was improved by using the knowledge and experience gained in castle gardens and abroad. Better varieties were planted and crop protection improved. Furthermore, sales went via fruit auctions and improved packaging was introduced.
The current food trend of healthy and responsible enjoyment offers plenty of opportunities for the soft fruit sector. The demand for more soft fruit continues for years in a row and on average a good price is paid for top quality fresh fruit.
Growing soft fruit requires a lot of attention and extra craftsmanship and care. The capriciousness of the weather, rain and hail, and infestation by insects, drosophila suzukii and bugs are major challenges. The challenge for FruitSecurity Holland is to work with growers to provide the best possible protection tailored to their specific crop. The Powerflex system is also gaining more interest among pear growers to control fungal pressure. Together with the consumer, they can enjoy cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, plums, kiwis, etc., grown with care.

It protects against rain, insects, birds, frost, sun, etc. The film has a longer lifespan as it is rolled up in thermoplastic out of season. Anti-rain systemThe Anti-rain system is similar to the Powerflex system. With the Anti-rain system, very fine mesh is used. Due to the roof construction, the rain falls in the middle of the row.
