Insect net

With the insect net of FruitSecurity Holland you are assured of a safe harvest!

Insect net is a fine-meshed plastic fabric. The stabilised anti-insect net is made of UV-stabilised HDPE monofilament. Monofilament is a thread consisting of a single fibre. A commonly used insect net is Mesh 40. This is an international designation for the mesh size.

Insect netting is the way to protect crops from harmful insects and birds. Insect netting is the alternative to (chemical) pesticides. The stricter regulations for pesticides and the increasing demand from the market for safely cultivated products have led to an increase in the demand for insect netting.

Insect nets can be used for many different crops. Soft fruits, plants and cannabis are some examples. In our Powerflex Foil System (the system for soft fruit), different options can be chosen with insect netting. In the gutter and all around to protect the fruit trees against birds and the suzuki fly (drosophila suzukii).

To full range

Drosophila suzukii (suzuki-fruit fly)

The application of insect netting is an effective way of stopping the suzuki fruit fly. Research has shown that insect netting with a mesh size/opening of up to 1mm2 stops all fruit flies.

The female Suzuki fly lays her eggs in ripening fruit. Often fruit with a thin skin. Unlike the normal fruit fly, these fruit flies attack good fruit. This causes the fruit to rot. Strawberries, raspberries, cherries, grapes, blackberries, blueberries and other soft fruit are very susceptible to the Suzuki fly.

the most effective way to control Suzuki fly is to apply insect netting to your field. In combination with chemical control, you can be assured of a good harvest result.

During the research on the Suzukki-fruit fly and insect nets, it was also found that in practice an insect net with a coarser mesh often forms sufficient bariere. Sufficient barrier to prevent damage to fruit by the suzuki fruit fly.

KLY value

The KLY value of our insect net is on average 600 KLY. In the Netherlands the average is 80 KLY per year. U.V. stabilisers slow down the ageing process of the plastic (PEHD). The amount of U.V. stabilisers determines the KLY-value.

KLY largely determines the lifespan of an insect screen. In addition to the KLY value, weather influences, such as wind, also determine the lifespan to a large extent. The disadvantage of too many U.V. stabilisers (KLY) is that the flexibility of the net decreases because it becomes stiffer, which means that during high winds the net can break wire by wire.

Investments in insect nets (incl. support material) are fiscally supported by the MIA 13,5% and the Vamil 75% subsidy. It concerns suzuki netting in the open air in fruit cultivation. It has been placed on the MIA and Vamil list because insect netting can reduce damage to fruit. The spread of chemical agents can even be reduced. It concerns only insect nets with a mesh size of maximum 0,98mm.

Drift Reducing Technique (DRT)

Insect netting increases all spraying techniques to one DRT class. With a closed rain hood, they are even 2 classes higher. Spray drift is demonstrably reduced by insect netting.

FruitSecurity Holland has a large stock of insect nets in its warehouse in Ede. FruitSecurity Holland supplies insect nets in the colours white and black. The standard widths are 2.0m, 3.0m, 4.0m and 5.0m. Customized products are of course also possible. FruitSecurity Holland has its own sewing workshop and can deliver insect nets custom-made.

Insect netting can intercept light and restrict air flow. However, it does stop the flow of birds and fruit flies that attack the crop.
