Hard fruit in fruit cultivation

Hard fruit and FruitSecurity Holland

There are many types of hard fruit. Hard fruit generally has a thin skin and juicy, firm flesh. The choice of a variety is determined by a number of factors: such as climate zone, local climatic conditions, type of soil, market demand etc. In the Netherlands, fruit growing started to develop strongly from 1875 onwards. The initially only standard orchards consisted of trees on seedling rootstock with an undergrowth of grass, which was grazed by cattle. The orchards were mainly planted on clay soil.

In the first years of the 20th century, fruit cultivation was improved with the help of knowledge and experience gained in castle gardens and abroad. Better varieties were planted and crop protection improved. Sales were also made through fruit auctions and packaging was improved.
